SOCIALLY ENGAGED PRACTICE

I have dedicated myself to developing a strategy that enables individuals without a musical background to participate actively in the musical composition process.

I am delighted to announce that our efforts have culminated in the successful collective creation of a song, marking a significant milestone in our journey. Expanding on this accomplishment, we are currently delving into collaborative instrumental works, exploring innovative avenues for collective musical expression.

I firmly believe that actively engaging people without a background in the arts in creative activities can be a catalyst for social change and a powerful tool for human emancipation. By providing opportunities for non-artists to actively participate in and contribute to artistic projects, we not only empower these communities, but also pave the way for impactful and transformative experiences. This enriches lives and fosters a collective sense of creativity and expression, thereby contributing to a more inclusive and vibrant society.

THEATER OF THE OPPRESSED GROUP

Together with the theatre maker Orla Devlin to establish a group focused on Augusto Boal’s Theater of the Oppressed. With the support of the Arts Council’s Artist in the Community Scheme managed by CREATE and socially engaged artist Dana Olărescu as our mentor, we began to research and experiment with a group of Brazilian migrants. We facilitated five workshops and are currently co-creating a play with this group.

ESTRANGEIRA (FOREIGNEIR)

The song presented here was collectively written and performed by the Brazilian Theatre of The Oppressed Group in Dublin. All aspects of the songwriting were created collectively. The brainstorming for the lyrics started with the following cards featured in the video.

GOAL'S NEXT GEN WORKSHOP

After starting our socially engaged practice, we were happy to be asked to lead workshops using the “aesthetics of the oppressed” approach. We had the opportunity to facilitate workshops in GOAL’s NextGen Youth Programme, run by an international humanitarian response agency established in Ireland over 40 years ago.

CREATE'S SUMMER SCHOOL ON COLLABORATIVE PRACTICCE AND SOCIAL CHANGE

In 2023, I embarked on a journey into socially engaged art practice after attending Create’s Summer School on Collaborative Practice and Social Change. This experience had a profound impact on my approach as an artist.

Before this, I was already a politically engaged artist and part of a Brazilian group in Ireland advocating for Migration Rights and Social and Environmental Justice. I have collaborated with dancers and multimedia artists such as Tati Santos and Thaiz Muniz. However, the Summer School inspired me to delve deeper into collaborative practices.
